Don’t be controlled by love for money. Be content with what you have. God has said, “I will never leave you. I will never abandon you.”Hebrews 13:5
Here in Africa, people love money! Money gives us freedom to buy what we want and do what we want. We are tempted to believe that money is the secret to security and happiness. But it never brings satisfaction. Instead of bringing happiness and freedom, money begins to take control of us.
The Bible warns against this danger: Don’t be controlled by love for money. Be content with what you have.
We are not naturally content with what we have. With the apostle Paul we need to learn the secret of being content in any and every situation. (Philippians 4:12)
How did Paul learn to live in contentment? It wasn’t because he had lots of money! His secret to happiness and contentment was in God’s promise to protect him and provide for him. He shares this secret in Romans 8:31:
If God is for us, who can be against us? God did not spare his own Son. He gave him up for us all. Then won’t he also freely give us everything else? (Romans 8:31)
Paul’s secret to happy and contented life came from knowing that because of Jesus, God would treasure him forever. That is the message of our broadcast ministry throughout West Africa.
Like Paul, God is calling us all to believe his promise: I will never leave you. I will never abandon you.
Prayer Heavenly Father, thank you that I am worth more to you than all the money in the world. Help me to treasure your love and your promise to never abandon me.
