You shall not covet. Exodus 20:17
Coveting is a self-centred attitude that develops when we become dissatisfied with what we have. We long for what we don’t have. Often what we want belongs to others, and we are tempted to take it away from them. Coveting leads to conflict and we see evidence of that throughout Africa and the world !
Coveting entered the world through Satan. Satan was an angel who became dissatisfied. He wanted to become as great as God, to be free from God’s authority over him. But that was not possible. That made Satan angry and he became God’s enemy.
Satan went to the first human couple, Adam and Eve. He asked them : Why do you let God tell you what is right and wrong ? Satan made them a promise : If you disobey God, you will become truly free. You would become like God ! (Genesis 3:5)
Satan made his promise sound so appealing that Adam and Eve disobeyed God. But instead of becoming great like God, they became even more self-centred and confused.
All human beings inherit from Adam and Eve this self-centred desire to be free from God’s authority and care. But God did not abandon the human race. He loved the human race even though it had turned away from him.
Long after Adam and Eve died, God sent Jesus into the world to defeat Satan through his death and resurrection.
Today, when we belong to Jesus, he lives in us through his Spirit. Through his power we learn to overcome our self-centred desire to be free from God.
This is the message we proclaim through our broadcast ministry and we rejoice to hear the testimony of listeners who leave a life of inner and outer conflit to enter true freedom in Christ.
Prayer Heavenly Father, forgive us when we reject your direction and care. Transform our hearts through your Spirit. Teach us to honor and follow you, our Shepherd and Guide. Amen
